Turning 50, Hosting a Business Talk Show, and Tearing Up the Bucket List

Turning 50, Hosting a Business Talk Show, and Tearing Up the Bucket Listđź’Ş

A few weeks ago, I had the honour of hosting an event on one of Australia’s biggest Chinese media platforms and radio networks, AC 878 Media Group where I interviewed some incredibly accomplished Asian business leaders in Sydney. Their stories blew me away -grand visions like becoming the most successful Asian consulting firm in Sydney to going IPO in five years.

Ambitious? Definitely. Inspiring? Absolutely!

It got me thinking. Until recently, I thought I’d already ticked off all my “bucket list” goals.

When I was 30, I had an opportunity to have lunch with Mr Gregory Malouf one of the most influential property developers and agencies in the Eastern Suburbs. The advice from that conversation has stayed with me ever since.

Greg said, “Before 30, it’s about partying, travelling and jumping between jobs. After 30, it’s time to get serious. Set 15 goals – business, financial, personal, self-development. Stick to them.”

So I did my bucket list over the weekend.

These weren’t your typical bucket list items. No bungee jumping in New Zealand or buying limited-edition designer sneakers. These were goals that really meant something to me:

👉Providing a secure and bright future for my family

👉Building a sustainable practice with a high-value team

👉Achieving financial freedom and personal fulfillment

👉Creating a lasting legacy for the next generation

Through sheer persistence (and a fair bit of working my butt off), I chipped away at them. One by one, I got there.

By my mid-40s, I’d achieved most. And now, in my 50s, I’ve completed all 15.

So where to from here?

Hosting that business show reminded me that ambition doesn’t end once you’ve reached your destination. Maybe it’s time to set new goals – bigger ones. Goals that challenge what I once believed was possible, or even meaningful.
Before the age of social media and information overload, who would’ve thought a simple lunch at a small café on Bay Street in Double Bay would mark such a pivotal moment in my life?

Never underestimate the power of the people around you, and the pearls of wisdom their experiences hold.

Now, 20 years later, hearing the stories and aspirations of this incredible group, I feel reinvigorated. Ready to set new goals. Ready to push beyond limits I never imagined.

Here’s to version 2.0 of the bucket list.
